About CULTIVATE

Bonotsu is located at the southwesternmost tip of the Satsuma Peninsula. In this region, with its mild climate and beautiful ocean views, the soil is enriched by mountain spring water and sea breezes. Using Bonotsu clay and Amakusa porcelain stone from Kumamoto as a base, we create pottery with a uniform and simple design that brings out the unique characteristics of each material. These pieces are practical for everyday use, combining the strength characteristic of porcelain with the natural texture and warmth characteristic of earthenware. This series was born from a desire to directly convey the unique character of the local clay and the culture of the region. The bottom of each piece is stamped with the latitude and longitude of the excavation site and the proportions of the blended clays.

*Oxidation firing (OF) refers to a firing method in which the fuel is burned in an environment with sufficient oxygen for complete combustion. In contrast, reduction firing (RF) refers to a firing method in which combustion proceeds under oxygen-deficient conditions—essentially in a “suffocated” state. The color of the glaze and clay varies depending on whether the firing method is oxidation or reduction. With transparent glazes, iron oxidizes to produce a red color in an oxidizing kiln, while in a reducing kiln, it turns the opposite color—green. Similarly, with white glazes, iron blooms more prominently in a reducing kiln than in an oxidizing one, creating a distinct aesthetic. Differences also appear in the shape: compared to oxidizing firing, reducing firing results in a wider rim and a flatter finish. The chemical changes that occur when the firing method is altered are one of the fascinating aspects of pottery. Please enjoy the distinct characteristics that emerge when you change the firing method, even when using the same mold and the same clay.

*Colors may vary slightly depending on your monitor.
*Since each piece is handmade, the color, texture, and shape of each piece will vary slightly.
